Detailed Itinerary
Qoricancha – Temple of the Sun
Your adventure begins at Qoricancha, once the most sacred temple of the Incas. Its walls were once covered in sheets of gold that dazzled under the Andean sun. Dedicated to Inti, the Sun God, this temple symbolized the spiritual and political power of the Inca Empire. After the conquest, the Spanish built the Santo Domingo Convent over its foundations, but the incredible Inca stonework remains perfectly preserved.
Sacsayhuamán – Temple of Fire
Next, we drive uphill to Sacsayhuamán, one of the most breathtaking Inca sites. Its massive walls are built with stones weighing over 100 tons, fitted so precisely that not even a sheet of paper fits between them. This was more than a fortress — it was a ceremonial center where the Inti Raymi Festival is still celebrated every June 24th. From here, you’ll also enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Cusco.
Qenqo – Temple of Mother Earth
Just a few minutes away lies Qenqo, a ceremonial site carved directly into limestone. With underground passages, altars, and carved channels, Qenqo was likely used for rituals dedicated to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and for astronomical observations. Its name means “labyrinth” in Quechua.
Puca Pucara – Temple of Wind
The tour continues to Puca Pucara, whose name means “red fortress” because of the color of its stones at sunset. This site was a military checkpoint and resting place for travelers, protecting the road to the Sacred Valley.
Tambomachay – Temple of Water
Finally, we visit Tambomachay, a sacred site dedicated to water. Known as the “Inca Baths,” it features aqueducts and fountains that still flow after more than 500 years. This site was likely used for purification rituals and ceremonies honoring water as a source of life.
